Teach Me Doc began October of 2022, but her love for making patient education videos extended far before that. 🤓
In the course of her studies and practice, she realized how often she was repeating herself with her patients. While the care was tailored to the patients, the explanations as to why were often based on the same things. Furthermore, other barriers to patients’ understanding also became apparent such as language, reading level and attention span.
At first, Dr. Karina made simple videos to help understand common instructions around surgery. The goal was to decrease common mistakes that could impact surgery such as eating guidelines around surgery and surgery guides. And the data showed that it worked! Many of these videos are on Dr. Karina’s YouTube channel and can be found here.
But as life would have it, this endeavor would not pan out just yet. Dr. Karina’s love for simplifying hard (medical) stuff lay dormant for a few years.
In October 2022, after leaving her job in academic medicine, Dr. Karina created Teach Me Doc. She began posting patient education videos on social media and has since not looked back.

I am Karina Canadas, MD, also known as Teach Me Doc. I became “Teach Me Doc” in October 2022. I quit my big academic medicine job in May 2022 after experiencing burn out and opened my own clinic soon after. In the process of figuring out how to reach more patients, I started making patient education videos on social media and found I was really enjoying it!
And so, Teach Me Doc was born.
